This is the privileged group, (those who know their families) talking down to us, the marginalized group of people. They have no right to tell us just how it is to be bought and paid for. No right to tell us how we should enjoy genetic bewilderment. Keptsplaining at it's finest.

As always appreciating your clear, powerful but measured critical thinking, Tony. Your voice feels really important to me.

So I have dear friends who have children, two friends conceived using donor sperm, the other's child was created using the mixed sperm of the homosexual couple, a donor egg, and a surrogate. And a third friend whose grandchild was literally created using purchased egg, sperm, uterus. I've never dared talk to any of these people about how I feel around the way these children were "obtained," even though as racial and/or ethnic minorities, I'd think they would "get it" about using bits and pieces of the human body to create other humans who can then be bought and paid for, so to speak.

Unfortunately, as a regular person, I find this discourse to be so high-minded and multisyllabular that I don't think it would help me should I ever dare bring this up. Would I be a Philistine to ask for an explanation of the conflict that's more available to regular folks?

This request doesn't mean that I'm not grateful for all the hard thinking going on here, because I'm convinced that at its root is a well of empathy and heartache.

After 37 years without him, I will never forget how stirred I was the day I met my son. He smelled like family -- probably, if I think about it, just like my father.
